Just over a week after New York sports betting saw its first online wagers, bettors now have a fifth sportsbook option. BetMGM began taking bets on Monday morning in the Empire State.

With relationships established between Empire City Casino and Madison Square Garden, BetMGM is positioned to become a diversified force in New York gambling. Empire City Casino is in Yonkers, just outside of New York City, and would be allowed to build a sportsbook under a bill currently being debated in the state legislature.

Where Can You Bet Online in New York?

When online New York sports betting went live on Saturday, January 8, 2022, bettors had four books to choose from, including:

  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • BetRivers (Rush Street Interactive)

Now, those looking to place a wager can tap into BetMGM’s app. Each of the five online sportsbooks have competing promotions for players.

However, the one-week delay for BetMGM may cost it in the long run. Other states have seen significant market share gobbled up by those operators which are part of an initial launch. BetMGM will be aiming to overcome the delay through an advertising blitz. The platform also crucially got the go-ahead from regulators before the bulk of the NFL playoffs and March Madness.

What Other Sportsbooks are Coming to New York?

New York may have tried to restrict the number of operators competing in its online sports betting market but there are still at least four more platforms coming. Between the two winning combined bids for online sportsbook licenses, numerous competitors still need to receive regulatory clearance from the state.

Still coming to the New York sports betting market are apps from:

  • WynnBET
  • Resorts World
  • Bally Bet
  • PointsBet

Each of these platforms will launch soon, but it is unclear when. PointsBet stated they hope to be up and running in New York by the end of January.

It is pivotal that the apps are actively taking bets before the Super Bowl. According to Rush Street Interactive, half of their handle during the first 24 hours of wagering was from NFL bets. Missing the playoffs entirely may be a death-knell for these brands in a highly competitive state like New York.
